The Craft of Fine Art Photography

Finding The Light
“I love working in the margins of the day.” When I heard Art Wolfe, one the premier nature photographers, speak those words, something deep within my creative soul resonated in agreement. I have been involved with fine art nature and landscape photography for over 30 years, and during all that time the excitement and sense of fulfillment I feel when I capture that perfect image in wondrous light has never abated. My passion for the art of nature photography began in the woodlands near my home in Southwestern Ohio and now extends to many other locations throughout the United States. My style is that of visual storyteller. My photographs represent more than just magical light on the landscape, but also seek to convey the perfect union between the photographer and the interpretation, imagination and memory of the viewer.
Capturing the Image
The photographic equipment I use includes professional-grade, Canon EOS digital 35mm cameras with Canon “L” lenses. Almost all of my nature and landscape photographs are multiple, lengthy time exposures resulting in a tremendous amount of detail and vibrant color in the finished print.
Making the Print
Each finished print comes from an original digital “negative” that has been carefully crafted within my home studio. I employ a technique known as “High Dynamic Range” which incorporates three to five exposures of the same scene into one image file. Through this technique I able to render a far greater tonal range than what can be captured in a single frame or viewed with the human eye. This is what gives my image that “almost looks like a painting,” however, I would like to emphasize that nothing is digitally added to the image. What is already naturally occurring is simply enhanced.
Over the last several years I have cultivated the optimal working relationship with one of the best fine art print making labs in the United States. All of my fine art prints which are created and sold for both public and private showings, as well as direct sale to commercial art consultants, are crafted by experts on true silver halide paper that is manufactured by Fuji Professional USA. This paper is known as Crystal Archive Professional, which is offered in Lustre, Matte, Pearl and Gloss finishes, all with an archival rating of over 100 years. Also available are gallery wrapped canvas. These are prints ARE NOT made from the more common, consumer-grade ink jet process but rather from professional grade digital enlargers delivering the finest quality possible - in rendering the most accurate detail, color and tonal range. This level of quality can only come from a photographer who is truly committed to his artistic passion and vision, and a professional lab service committed to the craft of fine art printmaking.
